Maria H. Oen holds a PhD in Art History (University of Oslo, 2015). She is currently Deputy Director of the Swedish Institute for Classical Studies in Rome. Oen has previously been a senior lecturer in art history at Stockholm University, a postdoctoral Visiting Researcher at The Warburg Institute, London, and a Marie Curie Fellow at the Centre for Medieval Studies, Stockholm University. Oen’s research focuses on visual culture in Italy, c.1200-1550. In her latest projects she has explored author portraits of late medieval female writers, the visual rhetoric of the Italian manuscripts containing Birgitta of Sweden’s Revelations, and the role of art and architecture in relation to late medieval visionary culture. Her recent publications include A Companion to Birgitta of Sweden and Her Legacy in the Later Middle Ages (ed. M. H. Oen. Brill, 2019) and Sanctity and Female Authorship: Birgitta of Sweden and Catherine of Siena (eds. M. H. Oen and U. Falkeid. Routledge, 2020).
