Art in Theory
The course aims at providing basic theoretical knowledge for analyzing many different theories and definitions of art, deeply rooted in the western philosophical tradition. The course also includes an
introduction to the basic contemporary debate in art theory, both analytical (Anglo-Saxon) and continental (European) tradition, with constant reference to the modern and contemporary art scene.
Its main goal is to deepen and enlarge our ideas about art and the way we look at the contemporary art world.
Students are required to prepare a presentation (Powerpoint) on the topics of the book Art in Theory to be discussed during the last days of class.

Exam
Oral exam on arguments and texts discussed in class. This part is graded 50% of the total.
Paper presentation 50%. It must be sent to professor at least one week before the exam.

Introducing Art Theory
What is art? Which is its relationship with theory? The course aims at providing basic theoretical knowledge, deeply rooted in the western philosophical tradition, for analyzing especially contemporary forms of art where the idea, the concept, becomes the most important thing of the artwork. The course also includes an introduction to the basic contemporary debate in art theory, both analytical and continental tradition. Its main goal is to deepen and enlarge our ideas about art and the way to look at contemporary artworld.
